Was Friedman still compensated for his work, even though the trilogy was cancelled?

With the cancellation of Knightfall, are there any plans to bring Michael Jan Friedman into the EU with another novel or set of novels? Having read some of his Trek and indie work, it's really, really good, and I'd love to see him write something in the EU.

I heard that all of the old comics are going to be transfered into novels. Is this true?

No - no comics will be turned into novels. Dark Horse is currently recoloring and collecting the old Marvel Star Wars series into a 7 volume trade paperback collection, but there are no plans to turn any of the comics into novels. Some comic elements will show up in the novels, and vice versa, but no comics into novels.

thanks for that information about the authors and the issues of L/M & H/L. I figured that wasn't true about the preference.

Possibly as graphic novels, but not novels. I had heard that there were plans to compile the Marvel issues into a graphic novel format in black and white like the early X-men books. This was through my industry contacts not my Lucas contacts. Others probably know more than I.

Say VIP's whatever happened to that proposed Knightfall Trilogy that was meant to be written by Michael Jan Friedman. As far as I can recall early cover art had someone that looked like Danni on the cover. So what happened with that?

This is a dead issue and must remain that way. Suffice it to say that the storyline was redirected at one point, and the Knightfall trilogy no longer fit in the NJO. Mike Friedman did an excellent job with his part of the NJO, and I was sorry to that part of the story go, but unfortunately this relatively small piece had to be sacrificed for the bigger picture.

So was Jaana real or not? I am curious because she said once that almost all the NJO authors were not comfortable writing Han and Leia scenes but enjoyed writing Luke and Mara ones. I would like to know if she was for real so I would know if this was true or not.

We don?t actually know who Jaana is. But I work closely with every NJO author, and I can tell you that it is totally NOT true that ?almost all? the NJO authors preferred writing Luke and Mara to Han and Leia. In fact, very few expressed any kind of preference at all, though there was a lot more uncertainty about how to portray Luke and Mara than there was about characterizing Han and Leia.

Are you saying there are no plans whatsoever at this point for post-NJO novels? Also, do you think after 2005 Lucasfilm will renew the license it has with Del Rey, stop doing Star Wars novels altogether, or pull a "Decipher" and give the license to another company?

We can?t answer this because we honestly don?t know. Hopefully, Del Rey?s relationship with LFL will continue for a long time, provided all parties can agree on all the variables, but it?s too early to even think about it. As for post-NJO, we don?t have plans in that area right now. Not that we won?t, but to tell you the truth, my brain is a little tired and needs to take a break before we venture into totally new territory .

Answers to a bunch of questions while I have 5 free minutes:

You are given the opportunity to go back and change any one decision that you or LucasBooks has made in regards to a story, cancelled project, or anything of that nature. What do you choose?

I?m not going to answer this exactly, but what I can tell you is that I would approach the planning differently. We intended the story arc to be organic, growing and developing along the way, in order to give authors as much freedom of creativity as possible, but in retrospect, I think it would have worked better?AND made it easier for the authors?if we had planned the whole thing in more detail from the start. However, I have to say I?m very impressed by the way all the authors have done their parts, and pleased with the NJO as a whole.

Eh, Zorba was made official in other books, but it is true that he started out in the Davids' books. (Which, IMVHO, were terrible. But, that's just me...)

**Darth Poodle - was Cerasi from Jedi Apprentice named after you? Or was it some odd coincidence?

Yes, Cerasi was named after me. Obi-Wan was my first boyfriend. ;)

Does that mean the Michael Jan Friedman question is one of the unanswerable ones?
