Ah, but when you translate that into God's Language, Canadian, it means Arch of Tirumph
I'm Canadian too, my friend. But I don't recall us ever learning a language called "Canadian". Last I checked, English and French are the official languages of our nation.
Just bugging you, I know you're just being facetious.

And the scene in episode 1 when the battledroids are arriving in Theed is very close to the Germans arriving in Paris through the Arch of Triumph (they have some funny foreign name for it).
L'Arc de Triomphe. It's not a funny foreign name. It's french. It's in France, so wouldn't you expect the name to be French?
Sorry, your comment made me laugh.

When you want to show a sign of overwhelming military might, there's really no choice but to rip off dictatorships.

I know George used WW2 as a big part of the inspiration :P I looked at a WW2 documentary where they showed fully armed german troops marching (not parade style) towards their next battle. And the first thing that poped up in mind was a battalion stromtroopers marching on a conquered planet! Sick!

+ I also thought Lucas' creation went beyond just the British accents. In creating Star Wars, Lucas used history in a way 2 describe the Empire , For Example: Look @ the colors of the Empire, Red, White and Black. The colors of the Nazi flag, plus the Stormtrooper's were Hitler's men in Nazi Germany.
Governor Tarkin- Was he an equivalent of Adolf Hitler :0?+
The Rebellion- was 2 me like those countries band together in WW2.
I think George Lucas Used some of or history in creating Star Wars and 2 me it shows. Tell me what U think?

Maybe parallell to the mighty British Empire. As for imperials to have british accent, it makes them elegant and "orderly". And ah...not to throw in some racial complain but, all the imperial officers are white? I don't know anything about the EU, but in the movies, all the imperial forces are white people. The nearest colored we have are Clone Troopers (Temuera Morrison being Maori).

There may be something more sinister at play. There's a fad in Hollywood films (and some American tv) where the bad guy is British or German. It could simply be that. Lucas did redub the stormtrooper voices for American ones, maybe he was saying, if it is true, that the stormtroopers weren't the real bad guys, merely an extension of their will.

Hello All,
When I watched the films 4 the first time when I was a kid, I found it odd that all the Imperial Officers had British accents. At the time I didn't know what the reason would be, did a British accent sound more authoritative? Even though there were some British accents in the rebellion, I noticed it more with the Imperial Officers, to me it added to the movie:). I know that casting was done in England, did George Lucas plan it that way? I thought that having both British/American actors was excellent, they all worked well together to form some of the best motion pictures ever made:D.

Wedge Antilles had an English accent? Since when? Hmmm, maybe I've never noticed, but it always sounded American to me.

It´s a realy odd cliché that romans have british accent. All imperials represent romans, and the Emperor is an actual roman Emperor like Constantin that led civilization to the dark ages. Maybe darth vader doesn't have a british accent because hes jew, yeah, he was born in the desert by immaculate conseption like that jesus guy, and also he had two children with Amidala that were kept secret by the jedis, just like the daVincy code sugests that the templarians hid Jesus and Magdalen decendants from the catholic roman church. They say Leonardo DaVincy was a great master of the templarians. That egyptian religion they say the templarians (jedis) secretly payed cul, where sex as was the way to achive god (male + female = new life) well luke skywalker did use the force to shoot some sperm into that big round esphere and caused pretty awsome orgasmic explosion. Oh and lucas arts logo looks egyptian too: Amon rá (male)+ kinda skirted person (female) mixded together like Mona Lisa.
ummm...

I really wish LucasFilm/Animation would hire Joe Pesci to voice some characters. It would be a great contrast to all of those British accents.

Well, C-3PO has an English accent and he's not evil (not counting the "robots are the masterminds behind everything in star wars" stuff).

I think Coruscant and Corellia are so large, they would all have many different accents.
Of course! We know that there are earth metropolitan areas of only a few tens of square miles that have different accents (not to mention London, of course, which is unusually indicative of this aspect).
