That's from "The New Essential Guide to Vehicles" so its definitely the cannon appearance. It looks great (IMHO)
Ah, I dont have the New version of vehicles and vessels.

However, I dont know how canonical that image is, as it looks like it is a peice of fan art or something.
The color image is from the NEGtVaV and the b/w image is from TEC. They are both 100% canonical. Wookieepedia does not host fan art, outside of user pages.

I meant an X and a K look a lot alike.
That said, the sheer craziness of turbolasers on a snubfighter...
Oh come on, that just makes it more awesome.
If you check the K-Wing on wookieepedia, it looks more like a skipray blastboat without the rotating wings.
However, I dont know how canonical that image is, as it looks like it is a peice of fan art or something.

And the K-wing is only slightly different than the X-wing.
The K-Wing and the X-Wing are very different ships.
A (standard) X-Wing seats a single pilot. It 4 laser cannons and a proton torpedo launcher. It has a hyperdrive. It has an astromech socket. It is general purpose starcraft with a slight emphasis on dogfighting. It is designed by Incom. Its wings form the shape of a "X" (when open)
A K-Wing seats pilot and a bombardier. It has a single mid range laser turret, a turbolaser, and 18 hard points on its wings. It doesn't have a hyperdrive. It doesn't have a astromech socket. It is a single purpose space craft specializing in bombing. It is designed by Koensayr Manufacturing. Its wings form the shape of a "K".
They have nothing in common really.

Well, the E-wing isn't too impractical. And the K-wing is only slightly different than the X-wing.
Really, it's only TIEs that struck me as impractical. Of course, in space, nothing is impractical.

If they come up with weird, unpractical (Yes, I'm aware of the TIE fighter irony in that) designs for fighters then I'd prefer it if they kept to the X-Wing. Other EU-only fighters just seem to fanciful to capture my imagination, or otherwise look like something out of Battlestar Galactica.

I actually would like to see more of these two in the coming EU. It seems like its only the X-wing that ever gets mentioned anymore.

What about the rumored new hybrid craft? The STD-Wing?

I think the E-Wing has had a bit more exposure than the K-Wing.
I suppose you could say they were supposed to be the next generation of starfighters after the X-Wing and Y-Wing. With X and E-Wings being better for fighter vs fighter and Y and K-Wings more preferable for bombing raids.
As far as the fans go, i'd say that they prefer fighters that they've seen, either in the movies or in comics.
I'm pretty sure that the K-Wing was only ever used in the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. At one point it seemed like every author just chose a random letter from the alphabet and created a new fighter.
I'd like to be the first to put a patent out on the Q-Wing!

The E-wing was all over the place in the Zahn-era EU; what happened to it? Let me guess: Fans preferred the X-wing more. True, but I also like consistency.

I've always been a fan of the weird TIE variants that only get seen in one or two sources and then never again. Some are clever, and fortunately it looks like the Rebellion Era Campaign Guide brought a lot of them back.
I'm particularly thinking of the TIE Defender (though we did see it in The Unifying Force I think), the TIE Hunter (from Rogue Squadron III), the TIE Scout (from Empire at War), the Missile Boat (not quite a TIE, but awesome nonetheless) and the Lancet Aerial Artillery (airspeeder from Empire at War).

True, and you do see several E-wing squadrons in NJO.
The Taanab Yellow Aces are an E-Wing/A-wing squadron.

I really want to know more about the Eta-5.
Where did the E-wings go? triple fire-linked laser cannons and sixteen proton torpedos make a formidable fighter and from what i've read the bugs have all been worked out.
I agree. I can understand, extrinsically, why the powers that be at LFL and the authors keep X-wings around for their fan appeal. I love the X just as much as anyone... And I can believe the idea of upgraded X-wings still being frontline starfighters after the E-wing came out. Looking at real world history, it would be much the same as how later models of the Spitfire were still among the best fighters the RAF had even after the Mustang and Tempest became available. But I still think we should see more of the E-wing. They may be expensive, but they're excellent fighters for a few frontline squadrons to have. Sort of like the F-22 in the current USAF...

And the Shriek bomber.
There's just too many TIE variants to count, but it would be cool to see more of them. But that might give the Empire some evidence of change, which doesn't quite mesh with the image of the homogenous xenophobes. The 4 kinds of fighters shown in the movies were probably stretching it as is, never mind a couple dozen TIE variants floating around.

e wings were way too expensive for what they were.
The eta 5 and the Aleph class bomber were both cool.
