These are comments that are intended to be read by
the VIPs, are they not? I have no desire to squelch
this topic of conversation just because it isn't
interesting to you.

I have no desire to squelch it either, and while yes, this is the place where such concerns can be brought to the VIPs attention, it is NOT the place for the fans themselves to debate the topic in depth. It will only clog the thread, and it is a good way for spoilers to start leaking into the wrong thread. I bought Street of Shadows 2 days ago and look forward to reading it, but it won't be a for a while because of a massive backlog of other SW novels, and thus, I don't want to know anything about it. Look above my post to see other people talking about Vader's actions in the book. This is not the place for that.

I think the various Lucasfilm
Powers That Be have a right to know when they are
allowing their authors to be offensive or stupid.

I think your opinion, like my opinion, is not necessarily fact. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, the authors included, and if LFL didn't filter them out of the novel in the first place, then evidently they don't much care. It can certainly be brought up here with the VIPs to see if that's the case, as it has been, but if you want to discuss it in depth, again, the novel has it's own thread.

If there isn't already a thread about it (do a search to see), you could even start a whole new thread singularly about authorial religious/political perspective showing through in writing if you wanted to.

I will rabily consume every vader tale I can get. However, I think in a fairly short amount of time they have shown him getting his but handed to him several times. That in itself wouldn't be a problem, so long as they also demonstrate his power. If they don't, in some books to come, they will be belittling what we have all thought of him over the years.

To that point, I think most would be pretty happy how vader deals with a couple of other characters in Coruscant nights II. I think in the two short stories at the end of the Betrayal paperback are also very good.

Vader should get owned by everyone, else the difference in lightsaber duel speed from III to IV wouldn't make sense. My gripe is more how he actually does manage to duel people of speed vastly superior to his own. He should win through raw telekinetic power rather than saber skills IMO.

I agree that if it isn't insulting, that the criticism should be read. We can't have it like they are kings and only surrounded by yes men that tells them everything is awesome and perfect all the time. It's flattery at it's worst. I personally would want to hear both the likes and dislikes. I hope they don't seek only gushing, butt-kissy praise and abeyance. Rather one sided.

That being said, I really loathe how Vader gets owned by everyone. He really hasn't done anything worse than the rest of the Imperials but he gets to be the Charlie Brown of Star Wars. Every other character (next the janitor) gets to be Lucy. It's out of hand, really. It's making me less of a fan. Like I said, there is no pay off for Anakin being a darksider. It's like a pointless exercise in misery. It makes ME miserable, as well as others.

Didn't they employ fan readers, once upon a time? I think I remember reading something to that effect on here once.

That aside, my sole complaint is that the author takes a few less-than-subtle potshots at the Judeo-Christian creationist POV.

Which is kind of a funny thing to put in a book about a universe that heavily features a mysterious force with a will of it's own that made it's own virgin-born child...

sigh Why does this not surprise me? The uninformed do this frequently, and think themselves ever more brilliant for doing so.

*Authorial
perspective is fine -- even ones I don't agree with
-- but this felt a little like crossing a line IMO.*

As well it should. Kathy Tyers did a pro-life, pro-creationist stance without being abusive in the slightest. I think it shows the character of Michael Reaves that he couldn't do the opposite without doing the same, if you get my drift.

  • If that's to be tolerated, then the opposing view
should also be permitted. Just my 02.*

Chances are these authors don't know enough about the opposing view to write about it intelligently. I'll chalk it up to yet another authorial gaff.

  • As some have mentioned, there are several erroneous
dates running throughout the narrative, e.g., the
Clone Wars taking place 20 years prior, when it's
more like three or four. Mistakes happen. I imagine
it'll be corrected in the second edition (and
hopefully before the Sci-Fi Book Club omnibus is
released).*

I may wait for the second edition, then. The same thing happened when they referenced the Great Hyperspace War and somehow got it confused with the Stark Hyperspace War. I don't hold with the notion that authors ought to be fans, but I do think that fans should be employed to catch things like this. After all, they have the ability to hire people to do online articles; they could certainly hire someone to read through a manuscript looking for continuity gaffs the same way people look for punctuation and internal consistency.

Finished Street of Shadows today.

LOVED it! This is my kind of story! Pulpy, humorous, lots of smaller adventures with fun protagonists and antagonists, and good nods to the older EU (Velmor, Cantrosians, Zeltrons!) I could read an entire long-running series with these characters and their adventures.

Thanks Michael and everyone at LFL!

Sue,

Long time reader here. Love the organization and effort put into the novels these days! I know you all work very hard, and it shows.

One complaint though. I didn't start reading the Legacy of the Force until it was just about finished, and I'd like to tell you why it took me so long. Back during the holidays I picked up the latest paperback at the bookstore, and out of curiosity I read the back of Inferno. At the top of it reads:

*
Inferno spoiler

**

*
"....Instead his wife, Mara, lies dead..."

*

end spoiler

Out of anger, I put the book back where I found it, and I am just now reading the LotF.

My question, Who writes the synopses on the backs of the books?

Also, it looks like Elaine Cunningham will be making a return with a new novel called "Blood Oath," which Eddie posted the link above. I'm sure you can't comment on this, but I'm curious to know if it'll be post-LOTF or KOTOR, or somewhere in between?

Just a hint or two? Hope you're vacation is going well.

****Possible Coruscant Nights 2 Street of Shadows SPOILERS... ****

Hey Sue - I know you said you were on vacation, but just wanted to throw this out there...

Coruscant Nights 2. There are quite a few errors/continuity issues that are rather glaring. First, the mention of the Battle of Drongar being 20 years before, when it was only supposed to be like 2-3, I believe. Also, Captain Typho discovers that Sidious was on Mustafar when Anakin and Padme were there, and somehow he automatically assumes it was Vader, when there was no mention of him before this. I believe there are a few others, but I just wanted to ask your take on this. Was it just a few honest mistakes or was this a dramatic rewrite of the new timeline? I suspect the former, but just wanted to know. Michael Reaves posted on the force.net saying it was mainly due to his health issues and medication. Not sure if this was really him or not, just got me curious...

****END SPOILERS****
