Gonna have to lock this up, since we close threads at 8,000 now. I'll open up a new questions thread in a moment, if your questions haven't been answered here, please ask them in the new one.

Is there any info about Maul's family or how Sidious found him?
Not directly.
However, there are several images of Sidious addressing the young Maul.
Maul's clothes are ragged and the background seems to be some sort of urban area.
So, it's not too much of a stretch to think that Maul was some sort of street urchin when Sidious found him.
Also, one of Sidious' lines in 'Jango Fett: Open Seasons' shows that he favours orphans, so it seems likely that Maul was an orphan too.

*woe. I'd always thought his skin was black with red tatos *
Maybe so....Red is not a natural Zabrak skin color. It might have been Black..or Brown .
WikiPedia says this:
Zabrak skin coloration can range from the rare pure white or pure black, to the more common shades of cream, peach, tan, and brown in between. Unlike humans, Zabrak skin color is not analogous to race. Rather it is a matter of genetic dominance and recessiveness, such as with the Ewok species, whose fur comes in various colors or patterns.

You can see a young Maul (and a pic of him getting his tats) here. Its from the story "Marked", from Tales #24 (collected in Tales Volume 6.)
It looks like he already had reddish skin, but Sidious added the black designs (and possibly darkened the red to a bloodier color.)

A recent Tales story shows that it is red. Not what I had expected, though.

If i've never read a comic before, where do you
recommend I start? Should i just go ahead and buy a
TPB if i see something thats interests me?
Thats what I would reccomend, find a TPB in a era you are interested in and check it out. I suggest Republic/Clone Wars.

*Now we just have to get you hooked on the
comics*
It probably won't be too hard.
Especially considering how good they are

I guess I must have. I bought the ROTS novelisation about a month before the movie came out. A friend of mine read it and said it was really good. I ended up not finishing it and saw the movie. When I finished it this January, I immediately wanted The Rise of Darth Vader. I'm now pretty much hooked on the EU books now. I never really was until then so I didn't read much stuff about any books.
the ROTS novelization basically brought me into the EU as well. the movie was comin out so i went to B&N and saw all of the star wars stuff. after i finished ROTS i got LOE and shatterpoint. i have been in the EU since.

Winter is only mentioned briefly in the NJO as taking care of Ackbar in his last days. She and Tycho are never mentioned to have had kids.

i tried reading vector prime but just couldnt get into the first chapter , its way too ep1 meets the joy luck club
they do that on purpose. They start you off with small characters in the beginning but the book explodes later on.

Wari, I'll make sure to look at the Rogue Planet thread before deciding whether or not to get it. Thanks for the tip.
