When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry... show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile.

I'm finding many of the "old enough to have seen it once in theater, but don't have kids old enough yet" group are not too thrilled with this.

I can see it. But as a father, I am most looking forward to letting the kids enjoy seeing it on the big screen. the 3D effect will be an added bonus.

But you're right MO, it's been a long time coming.

SW 3D to the Big Screen- I'm happy! My kids and I can enjoy the saga together on the big screen for the first time.

The funny thing is the news has the EUCantina Staff Skype chat on fire. It's up there with a continuity change from TCWs knocking something out of EU, but surprisingly the arguments are coming from the least likely of proponents.

Actually, that's Waldo, a different Rodian. Greedo is in the deleted scenes in which he fights with Anakin, but since Greedo is so young in Episode IV and since other backstories have been written for him, it was retconned that the Greedo from The Phantom Menace is Greedo's father.

Tell me that the Greedo in Sphere of Influence is Greedo the Elder.
...
Well, it will not be the more difficult to retconn, as father and son have the same name. :p

I see. Even though that's unfortunate, let me just say that I really appreciate the direct answer, especially since you said earlier you weren't going to give any more information before the episodes.

I just hope that whatever retcon ends up happening, ends up making sense. If the show has her murdered parents not being her birth parents, and has her aware of that, that's a lot to change. The existence of a (sub?)species known as Rattataki (playable in TOR) also needs to be dealt with.

I know at this point it shouldn't, but it still seems very strange to me to have a character from the EU have an alternate character interpretation like this. The movies, which intentionally eschew explicit backstory as part of their style, are one thing: everyone can see, say, Greedo and think of various backstories for him; Lucas decided he used to be a young ruffian on Tatooine who got beat up by Darth Vader as a kid (and whatever he does in the next episode); the EU decided he was from a planet of bounty hunters; maybe some fans thought he was an aspiring crime lord himself, etc. etc. The weirdness comes into play when the comic series the character first appeared in (her first appearance there predating her microseries appearance by nearly a year) has a backstory for her already there. It's like if you saw Citizen Kane, didn't like the ending, and wrote a story where the titular character reminisced about Rosebud, who was his sister, and then they went and solved wacky mysteries or something. Why write this story about Citizen Kane, and not any other character similar in the ways you liked? If the things you like about Asajj Ventress are that she's evil, and female, I guess (which is about as far as the characterization seems to go in the show) but you don't like her backstory, why have her be Asajj Ventress at all, and not a new character? If the reason is to please fans of the character, that generally only works if it's not the character in name only, as seems to be the case for any TCW integration of EU concepts.

Anyway, that's just the rant of someone whose first remembered experience with the EU was a comic about Asajj Ventress, and Durge, and Alpha. Keep on doin' what you can.

The migrant species-retcon. Should work, I guess.

That takes care of the larger species problems, if we suddenly have Dathomirian Zabraks, Dathomirian Rattataki and Dathomirian Humans. All whom practice variants of the witch culture.

The specific Maul and Ventress questions still remain, then. Heh. Maybe there is some insane Force ritual where the witches figure they need to exile a member of the species in question to the original home planet in order to stay in the good graces of the Force. XD

...or maybe it's just Gethzerion sending Palpatine love tokens in the form of future tools. That'd be kinda awesome, actually.

I refer to Savage as being a Dathomirian Zabrak. Eeth Koth is still an Iridonian Zabrak. Asajj is a... well l'm gonna just call her Dathomirian and leave it at that for the time being.

It was "unknown" because we weren't at liberty at the time to say she comes from Dathomir. Rattatak still figures into her backstory, but not as her birth world.

I'd be a liiiittle more reassured if Leland had instead said "Ventress will keep her original backstory," which he wouldn't really have any reason not to if she is going to (aside from cynical ways to increase TV ratings; I'm looking at you DarthMRN). Maybe that's what he meant by posting that, just pointing out that the "Unknown" didn't mean "Dathomiri," but I personally read it at first as "Even though there was a conscious decision to set her species in the Character Guide as "Unknown," I am still aware of what it originally was". I guess only time will tell.

(For those who don't want to trawl through Twitter archives, the original tweet was "The Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia listed Asajj Ventress's species and homeworld as "Unknown" but Rattatak hasn't been forgotten.")

Maybe I'm just hearing it wrong, but when I read the interviews (that is to say, the more moderate interviews by people who weren't so crazy about TCW errors), I never got the sense that Ventress is FROM Dathomir. Maybe she briefly trained there? And "mother" is a title (in a matriarchal society, Mother is as good a title as any). And Leland Chee explicitly said that he hadn't forgotten about Ventress's original homeworld (despite its lack of inclusion in The Clone Wars Character Guide).

Seriously though, every season this board (all the boards really) have exploded with "oh no they've destroyed canon forever!!!" and it hasn't been nearly as bad as we feared.

The only continuity problem I really, truly have with the entire TCW series is Anakin's Knighting date. I have no quarrel with condensing-everything-before-Dreadnaughts of Rendili-to-a-reasonable-6-or-7-months, but the 4-weeks proposed by Ms. Miller was too short. I hope that's the one TCW continuity they drop. But the rest I'm content with.
