Komari was Dookus apprentice while he was still a jedi. Thus the curved lightsabres. She was denied Knighthood because of her temper & infatuation with him. She then went on a mission with other Jedi to stop the Bando Guro. Instead she was captured & presumed dead by the Jedi . When she turned to the dark side & was leader of Bando Guro Cult, Sidious ordered Dooku to have her killed. He Force Chokes his former apprentice after hiring Jango Fett to find her.
10 years later Dooku (now Tyranus) finds Asajj Ventress. She becomes his apprentice. Before she becomes a sith her normal lightsabres (blue & green) are cut in half by Tyranus. As a gift her gives her Komari's lightsabres, red with curved handle. That is how she came to have the lightsabres.
That's how it all came about.
It is NOT just a fad of Count Dookus apprentices. I'm sure the writers of the books and comics have more brains that that.

Maybe Dooku always wanted to rule the galaxy. He trained a few apprentices and then he had them leave the order so he could recruit them to his dark puposes. Then he met that guy called Sidious. After that, his plans were spoiled. He became a slave to the evil will of Sidious. Poor Dooku, played as a total fool.

Asajj Ventress is not a Sith.
Neither was Komari Vosa. I'm sure that Asajj Ventress did not know who Komari Vosa was (a part of Dooku's past, and typically that is where the bad guys like to keep things: in the past).

mebby ventress thought voso was cool and decided to do sort of an homage to the fallen dark jedi
more than 2 sith at a time
mebby since palpatine's plans are going so well he decided to wave the the "only 2" rule and to start growing the sith again

the moderator was saying that there was no dark jedi in the movies (i think i dont believe it)
so Asajj should be a sith, but wait, there are already two sith with Dooku and Sidious hum?
so as i read befor in the celebrity chat, the characters from the cartoon would be in the movie, so if Asajj is in ep3, the 2 Sith rule IS broken.
(i assume that with the rising success of the palpatine plan, it can do what he want with the rules of his order, he is the boss after ll)

It's true, I suppose, that there have been no dark jedi in the movies, at least so far. However, Lucas has approved the use of dark jedi in other materials. Asajj is not a Sith. She's just a dark jedi. As for her being in Ep. 3, it's nothing more than a rumor. The actress who people thought might be playing her turned out to be playing a senator. It could still happen, I guess, but don't count on it.

I asked this in the VIP thread:
I know that Durge is going to appear in Boba Fett #4. Are Durge and Asajj Ventress going to be in any of the "adult" Clone Wars novels? I know you probably won't be able to tell us specifically which book(s), but I'm wondering if we'll see these characters in print anytime soon.

The beginning of Open Seasons is 36 years before AotC, and he looked about 10 years old in that, so he's probably about 46 years old in AotC.

Come to think of it Sidious never used a lightsaber at all
He did in one of the flashbacks in the Darth Maul journal. But that was a kids' book...it still counts though, but it doesn't really matter, he was just sparring against Maul...all it tells us is that he knows how to use one.

To add to Dooku's Dark Jedi Chic List, how about Sev'rance Tann? She's in Galactic Battlegrounds : Clone Campaigns, and is a female Chiss, yellow lightsaber. What with his fondness of female forceusers wielding sabers?
