Hmm, it doesn't seem to have been mentioned here yet, so I'll bring it up . . . there's an Atlas of the Star Wars Galaxy in the brewing.

Yeah, I just saw that too! Apparently Jason Fry and Dan Wallace are working on it together. Dan mentioned in his blog that he might be doing some bean-spilling in Memphis next week. Coolness!

Modi's Star Wars Atlas seems to be the heir apparent.

Oh, wow! Indeed. Thanks for pointing me to that!

Oh, no! I go to Ecuador for a little while, and when I come back there's no more Nav-Computer website! Best of luck with getting that back online, Carty!

In the meantime, is there somewhere else that you guys would recommend I refer people to when they ask me for galaxy maps? Browsing through the last few pages, I saw a few other people have their own things going. Is there a consensus on somewhere online to find a really good galaxy map?

Dear Eric,

Thanks for the work you put into your map. I hope you find a new place to host your site soon. The planet information is invaluable.

I also hope you agree with how I adapted your map. It closely matches Modi's coordinate system now. Not exactly, but at least there's no contradictions. When in doubt I stuck to your relative positioning of the systems.

Could you tell me what the asterisks and the two different colors of the star system names mean on your map? I wanted to look it up on your site, but the navkey page wasn't cached anywhere, not even on the internet archive.

If you want a copy of the Illustrator files, send a mail to the address on my website:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~wrvh/galaxymap
I'd have asked for your source files if I new of any way to contact you, but I didn't at the time.
Besides, it was fun to draw the entire thing by hand.

I'm sorry our suspicions about you losing the domain name were proven correct, Carty. :-(

Anyway, it was our pleasure to visit your site, and it's us that should be (and, in my case, am) thanking you for giving us such a wonderful Star Wars resource for so long.

Here's hoping you can find the time to make it worth your while to resurrect the project and keep it updated. Although, given the fact that the Cartographer's Apprentice is now a toddler (my brain rattled when I realized it's been almost three years since you announced his arrival), that's about as likely as George Lucas leaving his films alone. ;-)

Hey all.

I saw the new post and thought I should update people on my site.

Thanks to my ISP, I lost the name nav-computer.com so the site is currently without a home. I still have all of the data and I may launch a new site at some point. Infortunately, I've gotten pretty far behind with the newest planets out there, so even if I do put it up, it could be a while before it's updated.

So until then, I just want to thank everyone who took the time to visit my site over the years.

I've made a map of the galaxy far, far away.
You can browse and download it at:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~wrvh/galaxymap

It contains at least all the systems from Modi's map and Eric "cartographer" Przybylski's map (the site that used to be hosted at www.nav-computer.com)
I've tried to be consistent and include as much information as possible, but my main focus was to create a beautiful and usable map.
Therefore I made it as a PDF file in a similar (pretty) projection as the nav-computer map, so that you can zoom in as far as you like and search for star systems with your PDF viewer.
If you have any comments, for example if you found a mistake or have suggestions, please contact me (contact details are on the map webpage)
Enjoy!

What about planets that are used in the LucasArts games such as Peragus II, Malachor V, and others that people are wondering where they should be placed?

Star Wars tried that until around '99, despite WEG asking Lucasfilm to let them make more than just local maps. Turns out, it made bigger messes than it solved, so they relented when they realized that the New Jedi Order was going to require a way of conveying the scope, strategy, and implications of the galaxywide invasion.

For that matter, Star Trek didn't have maps until 2002, and they're only quasi-canonical and not exactly adhered to anyway.

This is one of the major reasons I love Battlestar Galactica. The producers (one of them) used to work on Trek and learned for his experience and refuses to lock things down and instead focuses more on the drama and characters than trainspotting.

how come in KotoR one and two the galaxy map is all wrong when it comes to the position of the planets you travel to?

Sorry, I don't have a good answer to that one. Continuity-wise, I've only used those maps in trying to figure out placements for the new planets from those games.

Bumping. Modi had some good questions; I'm hoping we'll get to see answers for some of them.

Randy Stradley has this to say:

Eventually (but not immediately), the map will be featured on our website. Then, slowly but surely, we'll begin making it "interactive" -- click on a planet and get taken to a bit of info about that world, plus a list of which stories (if any) have taken place there. It'll be along term project, but once it's done it'll be a handy resource for fans and creators!

As for Lucasfilm placing them all, that's actually something they specifically DON'T want to do. Suppose an author a year from now wants to, for instance, have a disabled ship limp from Tiss'sharl to Bront. Currently, Bront isn't placed, so the author could do that quite easily. If Bront was arbitrarily placed far from Tiss'sharl (and, at this point, there's so little about Bront that its placement could only be arbitrary), that storyline wouldn't work, all because Lucasfilm unnecessarily nailed down a world.

This has been suggested before, and it looks like Dark Horse will be doing something similar to this with their online map.

Thanks for the reply, jSarek. I was unaware that this has been suggested before. Do you have any more info and/or links about what Dark Horse is planning on?

In regards to Lucasfilm not having officially establishing planet locations: has anyone ever suggested that the "powers-that-be" at Lucasfilm just "grab the bull by the horns" and establish a location for all planets? It seems to me that this would be useful to future authors in helping them maintain continuity. And of course, all of this ambiguity in regards to planet locations would be resolved once and for all...there's plenty of ambiguity left for us to ponder in the various storylines!

Comments?

However, you're still not going to get all the planets on the map, because a lot of them simply haven't been placed by Lucasfilm yet. Planets only get placed when a story or other product needs them to be placed, and a great many planets have had no such need since the map was first created.

On the first page of this thread, Tasty Taste posts the question, "Why isn't [X] planet located on the map?," and then answers the question by saying, "With well over 1000 named planets in the Star Wars universe, there simply isn't enough room to fit them all on a single map. " This is a good point. So may I throw out a suggestion to resolve this problem: why don't the folks at star wars.com create an ultimate online galaxy map? Some features could be (1) large enough to fit all the planets, hyperlanes, etc, even if you had to use the vertical and horizontal bars on your computer to see it all, (2) 3D and rotatable, (3) a zoom in / zoom out feature, (4) a search engine where you could type in the name of a planet, moon, sector, hyperlane, etc., hit enter, and go directly to the location you're looking for. Such a map could definitely be the ultimate authoritative Star Wars Galaxy map! Thoughts anyone?
