Except when it's not (as is the case here). And
bold-facing your posts doesn't make you any less
wrong.

Anyway, Alexander, any chance you could post a page
number from +Balance Point+?

Pages 1-2( The Prologue) of the hardcover edition.

Quick Q for anyone: What's the age difference between Qui-Gon and Tahl? Having trouble finding that, but I know I have it wrong on the SWT-G.

Well said, Nathan...

And about the in-universe calendar, people in the SW-Galaxy can pick from numerous calendar-systems...

Nathan, the point that comes in though, is the in universe dating. The 12 month calendar, has only been used in the Prequel era in conjunction with the 10 month calendar, all of the post RotJ stuff was based upon the 10 month Coruscant calendar, this being the one that the Empire standardized to according to the HNN articles. That is what this discussion is about.

Just to jump in out of boredom:

Tramp: Yes, they did use the F1 notation for "Fete Week 1" in the old Adventure Journals. The first day of the New Year's Fete Week that hit about seven months post-ANH (given that ANH is in the 3rd month of the calendar year, and we just tend to date back and forth from it as if it's a zero because it's always been easier), was labeled as 36:F1:1.

However, to add some fuel to the fire here, bear in mind that what we think of as New Year's Fete Week (F1) is not considered the START of a new year on every calendar. The Tapani Sector calendar, which is the only one that ever gave us month and day names, puts that week as the Winter Fete Week at the END of the calendar year.

In any event, it really doesn't matter anymore. They played around with the 10-month calendar during the earlier days when WEG was still around, and most of the time it didn't matter too much, and it was rarely paid attention to. Eventually, when HNN came around, particularly when it jumped to Insider and we started to see relative dating for the Clone Wars era based on 12 months per year, that became the standard since, well, it's easier for the writers and readers to follow.

So, put bluntly, what's the point of continuing to argue over it?

It's the same as the "Canon debate." Some argue that the SW universe is Lucas' six films and nothing else. Others argue that the Expanded Universe materials that Lucas' companies, but not Lucas himself, consider part of the continuity make up the universe. People don't seem to get the simple, practical fact that, realistically, and in practice, they're BOTH right. Both concepts co-exist, and which you're referencing depends upon context.

The SW universe has both a 12-month calendar at times, and a 10-month calendar at other times. It's not a matter of one or the other, but two that the creators used at different times, and they realistically decided to change their minds and make things easier. It's not an "either or" proposition. Just accept that things changed in the middle of the creative process and it left some contradictory concepts of time.

It's far, far too easy to get far, far too wrapped up in the minute, nitpicky stuff and assume that there MUST be an exact, 100% perfect answer. This is the publishing biz, folks, and it's a project that's been going on, in its current "Bantam and Beyond" form for nearly a decade and a half, or nearly twice that long overall. Try to keep real world circumstances in mind and accept how developments and choices in the "real world" shaped the fictional world. It's just plain imperfect by its very nature.

Well I don't have the Adventure Journals, so I can neither verify nor deny that. I'm just using basic dating logic. And from the examples given, I don't think they ever posted any dates using F1 in the months place.

Secondly, The Clone Wars isn't an inidcation, because, it is a completely different era, and, as stated in the HNN articles, they had used several different calendars back during the latter days of the Old Republic, until they were all consolidated under the 10-month system, and in the Rebellion and later eras, that is the one that survived. As far as the authors and pregnancies go, they never really broach that fact. It isn't even brought up, so that argument doesn't work. As far as Dan Wallace goes, that is his opinion. Just because they may not specifically refer to it in the texts, doesn't mean that it isn't used.

I'm pretty sure the Adventure Journal shows us how to chronicle fete weeks:

35:F1:1 would be the first day of Fete Week, during the year of the Battle of Yavin.

Anyway, if the Clone Wars timeline is any indication, LFL has moved away from using the 10 month calendar (not that they ever really di)

...even the dating system shown on Galaxywide Newsnets was fairly arbitrary...there's an 11th month in GalaxyWide NewsNets from Adventure Journal # 12 or 13. Anyway, do you really see a SW author claiming pregnancies last 7.5 months, and not 9? It would confuse readers who don't know of the obscure 10 month calendar. Check Dan Wallace's blog from a while back...he specifically states that most people at LFL dont use the 10 month calendar.

+By this we can extrapolate that the year, whether Tapani-named or not, in the Star Wars galaxy flows as follows:
2 months, 1 holiday, 1 month, 1 festival week, 2 months, 1 holiday, 1 month, 1 festival week, 2 months, 1 holiday, 2 months, 1 festival week

Please note, however, that by the Galaxywide News Nets system of dating, the Winter Fete is listed as the first festival week of the next year since, technically, it takes place after the last month of the year. Thus the Winter Fete after 35:10:35 would be 36:F1:1, not 35:F3:1. (This is why, on Coruscant, Winter Fete is known as New Year Fete Week.)+

More than likely though, the Holidays and fete weeks are incorporated within the months that precede them, or could be split between the months preceding and following. Thus the New Years Fete week could go from 35:10:36-35:10:40, or 35:10:36-36:01-01. Thus, months with Holidays have 36 days, and months with fete weeks have 40.

Think about it, what are the probabilities of another planet even in our own galaxy having the exact same calendar as Earth? Slim to none. So why would the GFFA? The answere is that it wouldn't. It would have its own unique calendar. And, if you are going to chronical something, in universe, on a month-to-month basis, it just makes more sense to use the proper in universe calendar. That is the logic behind it.

+Thanks. I'm quite familiar with the calendar, believe me. I'm not disputing that the calendar exists, or even that its official or not, what I'm disputing is the logic behind using it, and only it, to timeline the SW universe on a month-to-month basis, when it seems pretty obvious that the authors don't use it in writing their novels (or comics or what-have-you).

And as a timeline-person, the reason I don't like it is because it unneccessarily confuses things.+

It only confuses things if you don't know about it. And the logic behind it is actually quite simple: this is another galaxy. Logically, they would have a different calendar. It would not make sense for them to have an identical calendar to our own. Also, you don't know for certain that the authors aren't using it. It would be safer to assume that they are indeed using it and that any reference to dates uses Galactic Standard. (cont.)

One should also keep in mind that while the 10-month calendar was the standard Star Wars calendar for a long time, the newer materials, particularly those in the Clone Wars storyline (including Republic HoloNet News and CIS Shadowfeed) are now utilizing a 12-month calendar, like that of Earth. As such, you will often find conversions being made for consistency.

All In formation was copied directly from The Star Wars Timeline Gold. However the origional information may be found in the West End Games RPG Sourcebook Lords of the Expanse.

Also, according to a Galaxywide News Nets story published in the Official Star Wars Adventure Journal #3 by West End Games, the Senate was dissolved on 35:3:5 and Alderaan was destroyed on approximately 35:3:7, thus making A New Hope take place in the middle of a year, by the Star Wars calendar. Since dates for almost every Star Wars story are dated in relation to the Battle of Yavin, however, I will continue to use the more widely-used dating of items in relation to SW4 instead of Galactic Standard Years, as the Adventure Journal story would suggest.

+Using the above information and articles from Galaxywide News Nets (in The Official Star Wars Adventure Journal) and HoloNet News (on holonetnews.com, not its Star Wars Insider
counterpart) as guides, we also know that the galactic standard for dating is YY:MM: DD. For
example, the Imperial Senate is disbanded on 35:3:5, which would be the fifth day of the third
month (Selona in the Tapani Sector), of the year "35." The year number, generally a 2-digit
number, refers to years after the Great ReSynchronization that took place, presumably, on Elona 1, 36 BSW4 (00:1:1), which is mentioned in HoloNet News #45.+

+On Time Measurement in the Star Wars Galaxy

In the Official Continuity's Star Wars universe:
368 days = 1 year
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
5 days = 1 week
7 weeks = 1 month
35 days = 1 month
10 months + 3 festival weeks + 3 holiday days = 1 year

By the Tapani Sector's domestic calendar, which is Galactic Standard with local names, the year flows as follows:
Month 1: Elona
Month 2: Kelona
Holiday 1: Tapani Day
Month 3: Selona
Festival Week 1: Expansion Week
Month 4: Telona
Month 5: Nelona
Holiday 2: Productivity Day
Month 6: Helona
Festival Week 2: Shelova Week
Month 7: Melona
Month 8: Yelona
Holiday 3: Harvest Day
Month 9: Relona
(The Freeworlds Region of the Tapani Sector also recognizes Relona 10 - 15 as
Independence Week.)
Month 10: Welona
Festival Week 3: Winter Fete

Also, the week flows as follows:
Day 1: Atunda
Day 2: Katunda
Day 3: Satunda
Day 4: Datunda
Day 5: Natunda+
