Something just occurred to me. Did anyone else notice that Grand Admiral Takel is wearing gloves in the header illustration for the SWI 66 article? Previous official images have established pretty well that gloves, like hats, were not standard for Grand Admirals, and Corroney's illustrations of Grand Admirals Batch, Grunger, Makati, Pitta, Syn and Tigellinus bear this out. It just dawned on me: Takel had a spice habit, and in the Han Solo Trilogy there are descriptions of how people forced to work as slaves at the Hutts' Ylesia spice-processing operation developed multiple tiny cuts and lacerations on their hands from handling Glitterstim threads. Could it be that Takel wore gloves normally associated with lower-ranking officers so that his hands wouldn't give him away as a spice user? Just a thought....

I've wondered that myself on a few occasions. Apparently, Tigellinus was the name of a minister and homey of Nero. I suspect the Davids picked "Grunger" based on it being just generally bad sounding. Grant almost certainly got his name from our own Ulysses S. Grant. Beyond that, my guesses come up short.

I was wondering if anyone's noticed any possible hints at the (out-of-universe) origins of the Grand Admirals' names?

Grand Admiral Declann's name might possibly be inspired by Declan Mullholland, the actor who played Jabba the Hutt in the hangar bay scene originally deleted from ANH.

Also, last semester I was taking an Archaeology course on human prehistory, and I noticed that one of the more important Neanderthal sites outside Europe is Teshik-Tash, in Central Asian Russia. Anyone want to bet on the origins of Grand Admiral Teshik's name? ;)

Finally, avid birder that I am, I have to point out that a pitta is any one of a number of species of colourful tropical songbirds. :p Go figure... ;)

Next time, title your poll in much the same way you titled this thread.

I thought about that, but decided the thread would probably sink straight to the bottom with no replies for the reasons stated above. :p Although if one were to run such a poll at, say, TFN, perhaps, I'd guess it would probably be Zaarin hands down because he's probably the best-known of the Emperor's Dozen by a wide margin.

Their uniforms are somewhat similar to those of the Grand Admirals, but there are differences (for instance, if I recall correctly, they wear black pants).

I'm pretty sure that's correct. At least, a uniform with white tunic and black pants is frequently seen in the background in the OT. I don't personally recall seeing an official source say that it's ISB, but it seems a safe assumption based on Colonel Yularen's tunic...

Oh well. Put me down in spirit for a Thrawn vote.

Will do. Thrawn's ahead by three votes at last count anyway. ;) I voted Pellaeon. :p ;)

*Quite predictably. How many fans, even fairly hardcore ones, really know of any besides Thrawn and Pellaeon? And even for those of us who are aware, there simply hasn't been enough written about the others to put up a significant challenge to the stars.*

Indeed. Hopefully that will change in some of the post-ROTS novels on the horizon (although they might not yet hold that rank in the timeframe of the ones currently scheduled, they could still be in there).

That actually wasn't one of the Grand Admirals. That was Colonel Wulf Yularen, a member of the Imperial Security Bureau. Their uniforms are somewhat similar to those of the Grand Admirals, but there are differences (for instance, if I recall correctly, they wear black pants).

jSarek, do you have an account at galacticsenate.com?

I'm afraid I don't.

*I was just wondering because I started this poll:

Who's your favourite Grand Admiral?*

:D

(The link won't work if you don't have an account. :|)

Oh well. Put me down in spirit for a Thrawn vote.

Predictably, it's become a Thrawn vs. Pellaeon contest.

Gee, I feel bad about forgetting to tell Mr. Corroney what a good job I thought he did on SWI 66 at the time he posted here. :(

Maybe I'll catch him at galacticsenate.com...

Greetings, Mr. Corroney. It's a pleasure to have you join our thread. :-)

Though I'm afraid I must admit I'm not a great fan of your particular artistic style (it's a bit . . . shadowy? . . . for my tastes), I am a great fan of the consistent dedication you've shown to illustrating the Star Wars universe. HNN, Insider, and the recent RPG supplements would simply not be the same without your presence. And, of course, you had impeccable taste in choosing to illustrate one Insider article in particular . . . ;-)

Anyway, I do have a question for you. Did you intend for your picture of Takel to be from a point earlier in his life from the older-appearing image in +Glove of Darth Vader+? Or were you not made aware that that book had a picture of him? (Don't feel bad if it's the latter; I can totally understand not wanting to open that book!)

Speaking of the Grand Admirals, I created the artwork featuring all 13 of the infamous Imperials for SW Insider and used to have all of thier portrait artwork on display at my official site. I've since taken them down though except for the Grand Admiral Thrawn portrait art and the 'Vader Meets Thrawn' illustration, both if which are in my Star Wars Insider Art gallery here...

http://www.joecorroney.com/cgi-local/imageFolio.cgi?direct=St ar_Wars/Star_Wars_Insider_Art

You can still see my character designs for the GA's if you pick up a copy of SWI #66 (which I also have a few autographed copies left for sale in my online store at my site too).

Hope everyone enjoyed my artwork for the feature, that was definitely one of my favorite SW projects I've illustrated :)

It looks pretty promising. Although I'd say offhand that the comic strip with the Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuits is non-continuity.

I knew there was something in the back of my head begging to be endorsed from that issue, and Bungo and Rusti Get Carry-Out is that something. ;-)

Although there are RPG stats for Bungo, Rusti and the Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuits!

And back story, too. ;-)

*And I loved Pabawan's cartoon: "B'Hob's Discount Superweapons." Especially given that it was drawn back in the days when the EU was looking like the "Superweapon of the Month Club..." I need to find the SWAJ thread... *

Ah, yes. Fragments from the Mind's Eye was a little hit-and-miss at times, but that was one of the best ones.

What? Topic? Oh, ah, umm, I think there's also a mention of Thrawn in the NewsNets using the same picture as the big full-color painting in the front. ;-)

Grunger was mentioned a couple of times, but he never appeared; he's probably the "next most mentioned" after the ones I listed earlier, though. Pitta, however, wasn't even mentioned until the Essential Chronology.

Ah. Thanks. :)

Excellent! That's a decent issue beyond just those two stories, IIRC - though, my sleep-deprived brain can't recall what, and I'm away from my books so I can't check, so I'll just leave you to cryptically wonder what I'm talking about.

So Grunger and Pitta weren't in the infamous Trioculus Saga, just the EC?

*BTW, earlier this week I chanced upon a copy of SWAJ 1 Vol. 11: the one with Command Decision! And Spare Parts by Pablo Hidalgo, but that's off-topic. It was the only SWAJ he had left lying around. Quite a lucky find, IMO. *

That would be nice, but I don't want to get my hopes up. ;)

Indeed. In fact, that goes for the majority of the Grand Admirals in there; only Thrawn, Tigellinus, Zaarin, and to a lesser extent Takel had much more than a line or two in prior sources.
