I searched a little, and if I understand correctly, Lethal Alliance is absolutely incompatible with Dark Forces.
Which Dark Forces are we talking about? The game, at least, is S-canon, mening new sources are free to ignore its content at will.
But if you are talking about the graphic novels, that is a trickier question. Star Wars: The Comics Companion doesn't put them in neither its C or S-canon sections, and Leland has yet to divulge which canon level they fit in. Per his statement in the Holocron thread about only current comics being C-canon, which Dark Forces clearly isn't, and without them being redeemed by the Companion as other old comics have been, it would seem that they are S. Especially if they conflict with Lethal Alliance.
*Is Lethal Alliance canonical ? *
In all likelyhood. If it conflicts with nothing other than strongly implied S material, we have to assume so.

Nobody is forcing you to buy in hardcover anyway. In fact, them selling it first in hardcover not only helps us (I happen to like hardcovers), but helps them and will allow them to stay successful. I know it's cool to be able to discuss the book on forums right when it comes out, but sacrifices must be made sometimes.

If you can't afford them, wait for the paperback. Simple solution, and for a while, they were even putting bonuses in the paperbacks in the way of short stories, etc. Don't tell them not to put them out in hardback! They'll do what sells, and no one is suffering. Just waiting. And you can always check them out from a library if you can't wait to read it until it's in paperback. Some of us prefer the hardback and trade paperback format!

1000 character limit...
Admittedly we have also seen a corresponding increase in the total number of novels released per year: from about 6 or 7 in 1999/2000 to 10 in 2008; but when Del Rey took over the contract in 1999/2000 hc's accounted for on average 33% of the books released per year (2000-2007), in 2008 that had increased to 60% (70% if including Wild Space!).
At present this year 50% of books released with be hc/tpb, and half of the remaining paperbacks will be re-releases of last years hc's!
Now let's add in the young reader books, the non-fiction books, the comics, the comic trade-paperbacks...

*The only part of the new contract that bugs me is the number of Hardcovers. Some of us can't afford those. *ahem**
I agree, over the past two years the number of hardcovers (hc) being released has steadily increased: -
1999 = 2 (INCLUDES TPM novelization)
2000 = 2
2001 = 3
2002 = 3 (INCLUDES AotC novelization)
2003 = 3
2004 = 3
2005 = 3 (INCLUDES RotS novelization)
2006 = 3
2007 = 4
2008 = SIX: Invincible, TCW, TFU, Order 66 (not hc in UK), Millennium Falcon (not released in hc in UK till April 2009), and LS & the Shadows of Mindor; PLUS TCW: Wild Space in trade paperback (hc in UK).
(Not to mention the $100+ for The Complete Encylopedia - oh in hc!!)
2009 = FIVE planned for release, the three FotJ's, Deathtroopers, and Darth Bane #3; PLUS Karen Traviss's TCW: No Prisoners in tpb (but hc in the UK).
cont'd...

I searched a little, and if I understand correctly, Lethal Alliance is absolutely incompatible with Dark Forces.
If I follow the chronology of the game :
- Rianna is recruted by Kyle Katarn.
- Rianna discovers the Death Star at Despayre.
- Rianna runs for a mission on Danuta for the updated plans of the Death Star.
But there is some problems : Katarn do not know Leia by the time (but together in cinematics in the game). And Mon Mothma took him for the suicidal mission on Danuta but absolutely didn't trust him. So he can't recrute for the Rebellion. Ans he have absolutely no movement liberty in the novel between his encounter with Jan and the mission. How the Lethal Alliance storyline could be plausible ?
Is Lethal Alliance canonical ?

Hello, I have two little questions.
- The Dark Forces novels implies that Jan Ors and Kyle Katarn never met Leia or Luke before. I can understand for Kyle (Mon Mothma doesn't trust him at all), but Jan ? Or is she simply among those wardogs than Mon Mothma keep away from official hierarchy (as Alpha Blue) ? A sort of private army, after all. Even if Jan is known among the Rebellion ranks.
- The game Lethal Alliance implies that Katarn was already in the circle of Mon Mothma and Leia. Mon Mothma, I can eventually understand : it's an agent, even if she didn't trust him in that time. But Leia ?
So, the two questions are one, after all : Jan and Kyle, unknown to Leia and Luke before 5 ABY as in Dark Forces : Rebel Agent ?

Yeah, although the hardback format is a bit rough, it was never really even a question of whether I'd buy them or not. A lot of people say they're "done" with SW altogether, but I think everyone will end up buying them anyway.
I think it's just one of those fads now to hate majorly on anything that is new SW material. I don't really like it to tell you the truth. But these forums (sw.com) are full of people ready to buy and discuss them, so I'm happy regardless.

A long time, that's for sure. Sue and crew have really been listening, and it shows: brand new authors, brand new characters, more standalone novels, etc.

Exactly. How long have we been crying for people to add new characters?

Sure Jaden is an unknown character, sure, but there's only one way to change that: write about him.

Jedi Academy, which is Jaden's first and currently only major appearence, was an Xbox/PC game that came out in 2003, following the success of Jedi Outcast.

In fact, I believe the entire Dark Forces/Jedi Academy line was originally intended for desktop, and only some were pushed onto other consoles

I believe (though could be wrong) it was for desktop in the late 90s.

When did that even come out? I never heard of it, and I'd like to consider myself a fairly innate gamer for most of my youth up until a few years ago. I always followed the SW games. Also, what console was it for?

JA was best-selling?
Far as I know. From what I hear it was a great game. (never had it myself).
