these novels are quite complex. I can't picture
anyone younger than fifteen or so actually reading
them and understanding them.

Yeah, but there's all the futuristic technology, flight/combat maneuvers, politics... It'd still >have to be a smart kid.
Besides, if Traitor's violence level didn't scare them away, I'd say they're in for keeps.

Hey, I'm 15 and I've been reading Star Wars books since I was 13. They aren't too complicated for my taste and I just LOVED Vergere's and Jacen's philosophical discussions about the force in Traitor.

Now we know that Anakin was knighted only four weeks after the Battle of Geonosis, so there isn't even room for the Battle of Jabiim (referenced in KT's TCW novelization). So we will just have to live with the fact that there are quite a few stories +about +the Clone Wars, but many if not most of them may be apocryphal. (Note that Stover has now introduced in LSATSOM the notion that many in-universe stories exist about the heroes of SW, so it's not necessarily as bad as it sounds.) It's not ideal, but I have done what I can with my own timeline to sort them out by story (ignoring all the dates, both old and new, is the only way they can all coexist). I don't know if this will be my final solution, as I am more and more inclined to keep them where they were originally, and simply consider them separate realities. For the moment, though, Del Rey's approach makes about as much sense as any.

  • Well, we know that with the new Clone Wars series,
that they do have to be re-dated anyway. In fact the
timeline acknowledges this change because instead of
listing the books by years they lump them together in
a 3 year block (which I must say I disapprove of) and
so they could easily have dated them according to
events rather than inaccurate dates.
*

Well, the trouble is that there is no longer room for the stories to occur prior to Anakin's knighthood, so you almost have to look at these as separate continuities. Even the first iteration of the Clone Wars stories was not without issues, with the constant references to events that hadn't happened yet, etc. I was the one who suggested lumping them into a vague three-year period, at least until the series was done and some resorting could be managed. Prior to Wild Space, we assumed that all of the prior material had more or less been lumped into the first year of the war.

They are SW novels, not college-level Algebra books.
There must be a younger audience out there that reads
these books.

And Sue, I have a request regarding the timeline, could you put years in to divide the NJO and Legacy eras like the classic and NR eras. The way it is now looks like the books for NJO all take place in a year or two, while Legacy appears to occur all in one year (when it covers 3 or 4).

Also, the new clone wars novels are listed before the
old ones, but they would have to take place after
(Anakin was a padawan in the old ones, but a night
with a padawan in the new ones).

I'm sure they're placed according to date, not events. They would have to re-date the old ones in order for that to work.

Just a couple slight changes, likely due to the rush to get it out, but something you may want to check out.

Sue, I also noticed that Patterns of the Force has an updated version of the new timeline, including the 2 CW novels, the Force Unleashed, all the Republic Commando novels, the Coruscant Nights trilogy AND Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor.

I have to say, I am surprisingly happy that we now have an updated timeline, but my question is -- how solid is this one, and will it likely be changed and/or reprinted due to the Approaching Storm being mispelled as "The Storm"?

Thanks again!

Hello Sue,

I was curious about the short story that (I believe) was printed on Del Rey's catalogue regarding a short story that takes place shortly before Outcast. Any hints as to where the prequel short story will take place, what characters it'll include and what the synopsis will be?

Thanks for taking the time. I hope you enjoy your weekend. ;)

EDIT: I also wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Michael Reaves' Patterns of the Force. Although the outcome was nothing like I expected, it did not disappoint and gave me some closure to a really great series overall. More from Reaves (solo) would be greatly appreciated!

*Sketches for Bane 3 already? Wow, you guys are on a cover binge this month Sue. *

I think they just have a lot of new books coming out this year besides one series like last year, kind of. Cool to see though, no? Anyway, Drew says that later today (27) or tomorrow his site will update with "a small Bane update." Looking forward to that.

Keep up the great work.

Any chance you could slip us the name of the main character Mr. Reeve's upcoming holostar novel? If we ask really nicely?

*Hey, Sue, is Deathtroopers going to go for a more psychological/thriller sort of horror story (like the old-style horror movies), or is it going to be over-the-top gross-out gory?
(Cover's awesomely creepy, by the way.)*

A bit of both, perhaps leaning just a touch more toward the gory horror, but all well within the story -- nothing gratuitous.

Deathtroopers cover = Wow

I wonder how this novel will affect the younger
demographic numbers...

Do the mainstream Star Wars novels even have a younger demographic? Completely ignoring the fairly graphic violence in NJO, these novels are quite complex. I can't picture anyone younger than fifteen or so actually reading them and understanding them.
