It was always a slippery and enigmatic ability. Then Troy nailed down an explanation in Invincible, and so that's the latest on what it can and cannot do -- you can't influence the past/future with it, only your memory of it/them. That was my interpretation, anyway, as I have not read Invincible for quite a while now, but did hear Troy's explanation at the Comic Con panel recently.

It could change, but what we have now seems to be working...it can't conjure up random dead characters from the past, which is ideal.

*> So did Flow Walking as an ability change from
original conception? And was this due to fan
reactions or something else?*

Yes. Kind of. Compare that little scene in Joiner King when Jacen first visits The Crash with the little snippets we have in Bloodlines, Inferno, and other novels where Caedus flow-walks back. Then compare that with what Caedus tells Tahiri in Invincible. They seem to be different, or they could just be different interpretations (i.e. not the entire puzzle, just pieces). Originally, it seemed you could influence some parts of the past/future, but the Force could always "course-correct," and flow back to its natural course if need be. You could try and set up a certain future as well, but that won't make it the future, just one of many possible outcomes.

Hey Sue, I was wondering if you can tell us when the backcover for Backlash will be released? And have you gotten any manuscripts lately?

I'm glad you didn't make flow-walking change the future. It is almost against the beliefs of the Jedi. Yoda tells Anakin that when someone dies you should be happy for them because they are with the Force.

Well technically it's a different technique-- but the results are the same.

Well if I can't find it again strike what I said untill I can....

  • FOUND IT!!

Jedi Academy Scourcebook page 20-

Echoes in the Force: You can use the Farseeing power on a location instead of an individual creature, peering into the location's past to view events that occurred there.

Yeah they've modified Farseeing to be flow-walking. But only if the person uses the Echoes in the Force feat.

Isn't flow-walking all about WHERE and not WHEN?

Yeah I was reading something the other night- can't find it now -typical- any way it was describing Far sight like Flow walking So perhaps I'm just mistaking the name
*
By that I mean you can only flow-walk back where you are located. So for example, you are in Chalmun's cantina in 56ABY. You would be able to flow walk back to any point but only in the Cantina? Only seeing things that happened in the cantina.

Or am I wrong? *

No your right- the thing I was reading was saying the same for the Far sight. Like Vos's ability. Grr I hate it when I was just reading something and then can't find it again!

The main difference was interacting with the past- you couldn't with far sight. I mean I disliked what was going on with FWing- but now they disarmed it so much that the ability makes no sense- why learn it if you have the Jedi's Far sight which does the same thing practically.

Acebat, to me it seems that is beyond the limits of flow walking. But I got the impression from Mr. Denning that they were sort of discussing just how much they could do with the flow walking. Ultimately, it's up to the authors/editors/GL how far it could be taken. Hell, they could just create some whole new thing. For example, shatterpoint, which hadn't been previously mentioned and is now a known force ability. All they would have to do is have someone powerful(Kyp) develop something new, or find some old Holocron with a long lost forgotten ability.

Having said all that, I wouldn't want them to be able to transport Anakin through time via flow walking to make him alive again.

And thanks to theredfoot35 for answsering my question on the quinlan vos thread.

Sue, is there any plans for a young adult series much like Young Jedi Knights in the future? When you think about it, many of the main characters from the NJO and beyond were created in Young Jedi Knight books who have since been main characters in NJO. Now Ben is in his teens, a full Jedi Knight with no friends. Is there any plan to fill in Jedi Ben's generation of Jedi? Currently the nearest Jedi in age would the the apprentice Seha. Can we look forward to any others?

As for bringing him back by Flow-walking, this is impossible, surely. I thought flow-walking was all about going back to revisit what has already happened. It doesnt matter if you change something, the timeline continuity always goes back to what has already happened.

Flow walking is a great addition to Force Powers. I hope we see it more. Its great for just reminding us that people like Anakin Solo, Anakin Skywalker and Obi Wan are still there, but not forgotten.

Flow-walking isnt about bringing people back. No one who has died has ever actually come back to life. Granted, Palpatine died at Endor but his spirit lived on. This is possible for Force Users. As for Fett, well, we know he fell into the sarlacc, but it was never confirmed that he died. So him surviving is plausible.

With regards to Anakin Solo, bringing him back now would just diminish his sacrifice and what he achieved on the Mission to Myrkr. He sacrificed himself to destroy the Jedi's biggest threat in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong. I say let him rest in peace. Knowing that he became one with the Force is fine by me.

Of that list, only one was an actual "death" in the traditional sense.

The point was that all of those characters were believed to be dead at one time, only for later writers to negate that by having the characters still alive later (sometimes they explain the discrepancy, sometimes not). The same would be true of Anakin, so I don't see any in principle difference between bringing him back through flow walking and the "resurrections" of any of the other characters.

As far as K'Kruhk is concerned: I do think it is odd that he is not mentioned if he was part of the Jedi order during Luke's time. On the other hand, I'm not very invested in him as a charachter so I don't feel as though I'm missing anything.

I definitely do think that a lot more could and should be done with Kyp in the current FOTJ storyline.

(sorry, spaced out that this topic was in the bc&t questions, not vips)

While I'd love to see Anakin again(and would still love to in a past tense flow-walking scene), I agree that it would just open up a whole wacky Pandora's box to actively bring him into the present in any form other than a force ghost.

Then what would stop them from bringing back Jacen, chewie or mara? It could just get too nuts. We don't want the EU to turn into Dallas(old 80's tv show)?

I do hope to see more flow-walking scenes covering Jacen's journey though.
