I mentioned before that I was buying everything my local comic store had with Shira Brie or Lumiya in it in their marvel SW collection. In the Shira run, they had #56 and #62. Imagine how well I got to know her character --- in #56, there were two panels with Leia talking to Luke and Shira, and in #62, everyone is accusing Luke of having killed her.  But hey, the fact that my comic store has the marvel issues at all is incredible. If I weren't a student, and had a alot of money to spend, I would clean 'em out.
I actually enjoyed the issues that I did buy, though. #56 was entitled Coffin in the Clouds, and featured Lando returning to Cloud City, as it was only a few systems away from the rebel base on Arbra, to discover that "The Lobot" had been reprogrammed, and was intent on destroying Lando! (cont'd) |

I'm gonna go with Arch too. His stories are just so well crafted. But Jo Duffy comes next. I can name so many issue numbers of her work off the top of my head that were just spectacular: #24 with young Obi-Wan before the prequels, #92 with the Dark Lord Flint, double-sized #100, and #103 "Tai." These stories are just so strong and memorable.

Just a question to toss out there... who was your favorite author on the Marvel series (not including the annuals)?
My favorites were Archie Goodwin and David Micheline. Jo Duffy's work was my least favorite, I'm sorry to say...

I've always wondered why I never gave the Dark Horse comics much of a second glance on the newstands.... the covers are too damned boring!
To give DH some credit, they don't let Marvel have all the fun. I'm personally a fan of Republic #49's cover tagline:
Jedi....with a gun!

Good stuff. AND, the writers listened.
I actually remember that letter.
And that's another thing I remember distinctly from Star Words... the vibe. It really did feel like the editors, writers, and artists were listening to the readers' comments.
Quick story: when Dan Wallace was writing the Essential Guide to Characters, he asked me if Greedo had any relatives. I reminded him of Beedo from Return of the Jedi, and Chihdo from Rik Duel's gang in the Marvel comics. When he got edits on his manuscript, he told me that LFL was asking where he got the Chihdo information from. I searched through all the David Michellinie and Walt Simonson stories to find it, with zero luck.... until something clicked. I started flipping to all the letters pages, and there it was: while Chihdo's relation to Greedo was never revealed in any story, a fan wrote in asking if they were by chancer elated, to which the editors replied that, yes, they were in fact cousins. So that bit made it into the book.
I need to ask Dan for my No-Prize!

The letters from the fans were one of my favorite things. The one I most remember was, after a series of issues depicting the Imperials as bumbling idiots (Luke and Shira Brie lead an attack on an Imperial convoy), one reader wrote an excellent letter reminding the writers that an Empire is not held by fools (at least not for long), and it was absolutely true. In ANH the Rebels destroyed the Death Star by a slim margin, and in TESB the Rebels were defeated at every turn. Good stuff. AND, the writers listened.

Great summary of the different Marvel eras, Mark. This though was the comment that struck home:
What's more, Goodwin wrote a Darth Vader who truly was the scariest dude in the galaxy.
Goodwin's Vader was truly evil, and I don't mean in the supervillain sense. He was intelligent, his moves were premeditated, and his sole obsession to discover the identity of the pilot who destroyed the Death Star and humiliated him. That scene where he gets the tortured Rebel to admit "Skywalker..." as the name he's been searching for is chilling. This is especially true the way it not only stands up after all these years but actually improved when we learned in Empire Strikes Back that the Rebel was speaking not only his son's name, but Vader's own.

And the thing is you would never suspect in a hundred years that storyline of which this particular comic was a part is one of the smartest Star Wars pieces ever published.

That would've been a great idea. There was one story in there, in the same issue as the Darth Maul Resurrection story I think, that was a farce of the early Fantastic Four... Rebel 4.

Anyone ever read Alan Moore's Supreme? That's has great examples of simulated Golden Age art and storytelling.
I'm a big champion of occasionally letting Star Wars be as goofy as its always been.
