This may interest you --- it looks as if the Marvel UK stories are going to be collected in an upcoming omnibus. Here is the link. I'd be all over this one as soon as it came out.

"My collection of Marvels, of which I have all of..."

Yeah, I've got all of the Marvels as well. It was the pretty much the only comic title that I collected when I was a kid, so after enough trips to the local comic shop, I was able to finish the complete set (this was in the early to mid-80's when the prices on Marvel Star Wars back-issues were still relatively cheap).

I love Carmine Infantino's distincitive artwork. And Al Williamson is probably my favorite Star Wars artist. My favorite stories are the ones written by Archie Goodwin and David Michelinie. Someday I'd like to get all of the Marvel UK comics, too. But, it would take a long time to get all of those, as they're pretty expensive - and rare.

I can't believe Marvel's Star Wars #81 didn't appear in the top 10 Marvel Star Wars covers article. It should have been #1! It is a fully painted cover by Tom Palmer. The story is called Jawas of Doom and features the first depiction of Boba Fett's escape from the Pit of Carkoon.

I discovered these comics in the summer of 2006, when I found a box of them in my grandparents' attic (more on that here, in the second half of the blog). They do make for quite fun reads!

Pablo hasn't written a blog in a while, so on the off-chance that he'll see this, I want to thank him for the excellent article he wrote on ten great Marvel covers. I loved the scans of his old versions. :) Any article about the Marvels is championship, and this one was very-well done.

And, since I'm here, why not talk Marvels? I've bought a few more since I last posted here a year and a half ago, and have read some great stories, including Silent Drifting, which features a young Ben Kenobi, and a couple of post-+Jedi+ pre-Nagai issues, including #92, The Choice, and #94, Small Wars. I still absolutely love the Marvels, and will slowly buy more from my local comic shops.

Edit: The Choice was Issue 90. 92 was The Dream, illustrated by Jan Duursema.

All of, eh? How'd you pull that off? I mean, I'm
hoping to some day, but that'll be years of eBaying
most of the first forty. :D

I got all mine in the late '80s. I had a subscription at the end. I was very disappointed when they cancelled the series. Have you seen the very last issue? Luke was shirtless with long hair and had a huge blaster rifle. He looked like Rambo.

Why don't you buy the trade paperbacks from Dark Horse?

*Some issues feature the date, price, and issue number in the north-west corner in a diamond-shaped box, and feature a picture of Spiderman's head in the South-west corner.

Others feature the date, price, and issue number in a rectangular box, and Spidey's head is replaced by a barcode. In comic shops, I've seen multiple copies of an issue, with both formats featured. What is the difference between the two? Was there a reprint run?*

Yes, the ones with the diamond and the Spidey head in place of the barcode are reprints. My collection of Marvels, of which I have all of :D, is a mix of originals and reprints.

The letters to 'Star Warriors' in the backs of the issues can be entertaining. Like the random one asking "Can you imagine if Star Wars had been made twenty years ago? Who could have played who? Wouldn't it be embarassing if Ronald Reagan had been chosen to play Darth Vader?"

One thing I forgot to mention --- I thought it was really cute how in the Shira issues, there would be random panels featuring Rebels trying to do maintenance work, but having curious Hoojibs perched on their shoulders. :)

I have a question, though, that I'm hoping Abel or Pablo might know the answer to. Some issues feature the date, price, and issue number in the north-west corner in a diamond-shaped box, and feature a picture of Spiderman's head in the South-west corner.

Wookieepedia didn't include it, but theforce.net informs me that Lumiya is also in Issue 97. I know for a fact that one of my comic stores here in London has it, so I'll have to pick it up this week. Hopefully before I get too far in Betrayal. :) Sadly, though, I wasn't able to get my hands on Issues 100 or 107. I figure I'll eBay 'em before the end of the summer, though.

In any case, I know that I'll be spending quite a bit more dough on the Marvels this summer. There are so many characters and plotlines that I want to read more about, some that I've glimpsed in these issues, some that I've only heard about --- the Knives, Kiro, Fenn Shysa, Jaxxon, Crimson Jack, and so many more. Any of the issues that were published before The Empire Strikes Back seem more rare, though.

There were a couple of unbelievable events, such as an entire Imperial Fleet being thrown into confusion due to four renegade TIEs, and Luke Skywalker taking out the entire base on Krake's Planet so easily with just the Falcon, but hey, it was the early eighties, and they only had so many pages they were allowed. :) Even though Shira had a very minor role until Issue 60, Issues 55-59 had enjoyable stories on their own. It nearly broke my heart in Issue 61 when she planted a liplock on a surprised Luke, as I already knew what she was and what she would become.

I had heard that Luke's wordless duel with Lumiya was memorable, but I had no idea! Issue 96 saved the usual box telling us the writers, artists, pencilers, editors, etc, until after the duel was done, which made it all the more powerful. The closeups on Luke's and Lumiya's eyes... wow. That duel was amazing.

I finished The Swarm War last night, but that wasn't the only reading I was doing to prepare myself for Betrayal. Thanks to scavenging three different comic shops --- one in Hamilton, and two in London --- I was able to get my hands on every comic in the Shira Brie storyline (55 - 63), as well as three of Lumiya's (88, 95, & 96 --- that's Figurehead, No Zeltrons, and +Duel With A Dark Lady+). I also bought #46, The Dreams of Cody Sunn-Childe, just for kicks. And I have to say that every issue was a very enjoyable read.

There were quite a few fascinating plotlines, such as Sunn-Childe's war against the Empire, hiding the Rebel Fleet in the Arbran Sun, and the attack on the Imperial Armada.

*I don't know what played a bigger part in my current addiction to these stories, Lumiya's duels with Luke or the Mandalorians under Fenn Shysa!

I kinda liked getting to know the Tagge Family. And Valance the Hunter. And Flint. And Admiral Giel. And the Wheel...

Definitely! It's been established that that one Hoojib was a senator in the New Republic, but to even see a mention of that in a book would be mouth-watering. B-)

Abel, would you consider doing any new stories with
the Nagai, Tofs and Hoojibs and any other characters
from the Marvel stories whom we haven't seen in a
while? Maybe in a short story or article for Insider?
I would love to see the Marvel stuff tie in a little
more with the current continuity and find out what
some of them have been up to since their Marvel
stories ended.

Maybe you could use any influence you may have, or Jedi mind tricks, with the Powers That Be to get something like this done?

That would be Arch and Carmine Infantino for the most part, though Al Williamson teamed up with Goodwin for the adaptations of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Yeah. When I wrote the last comment I only had 'A Long Time Ago...' #5, 6 and 7 (so my experience with Goodwin was the old 'Classic Star Wars' comics and the story 'Supply and Demand' in #6).
Now, however, I also have collections 1 and 2 so I've seen some of the Goodwin/Infantino stories.

I'd heard that to explain why Jabba isn't a slug in the Marvel stories it was said that it was Mosep impersonating Jabba.
Does anyone know the full story behind this and is it an official explanation or just speculation?

Well, for a very long time I avoided the Marvel comics because I was under the impression that they severely messed with continuity.

The malicious product of lazy overgeneralizers. There are only a handful of plot points that don't fit into continuity, and many have been retconned.

I don't know what played a bigger part in my current addiction to these stories, Lumiya's duels with Luke or the Mandalorians under Fenn Shysa!

Two of my favorites too. :)

Although I'll have to go out on a limb and say that I'm not a big fan of the Goodwin/Williamson team,

That would be Arch and Carmine Infantino for the most part, though Al Williamson teamed up with Goodwin for the adaptations of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Take care,
Abel
