The New Essential Guide to Alien Species is out now, and I'm happy with it overall.

Here's some new things I learned in it:

1. Humans count as an alien species
2. Bothans are described as "cat-like"
3. Caamasi look like lemurs (I had always pictured them looking like camels, for some reason)
4. Chiss and Zeltrons are considered separate species from humans, even though they are probably desended from them.
5. Chiss can be considered more evolved humans.
6. Chiss eye and skin colouration is dependent upon the amount of oxygen present in the air they're breathing. The more oxygen, the more blue their skin appears and the more red their eyes.
7. Clawdites (Zam Wessell's species) have to train themselves to shape-shift
8. Duros and Neimoidians are the same species
9. Baby gungans are tadpoles
10. The entry for "Hutt" comes right after the entry for "Human" in the book. I know it's alphabetical, but that's still somewhat disturbing.

The New Essential Guide to Alien Species co-author author Helen Keier has started a new blog:

Species research: Species particulars
Species selection: Species particulars, part 2 or how did we decide?

All right, thank you very much. :D Don't know how I'm going to make Sannah work now, I didn't know of the Changeling process. Considering my story takes place 42 ABY . . . Sannah most definitely is an adult.

Oh well, gives me an excuse to insert an OC, and I can think of a creative way to insert Sannah in there somehow. Again, thank you very much! You prevented me from sounding like a fool. Accuracy of alien species is something I want in this fanfic, and this helps me a lot.

Anyone have any idea what Melodies are? (That's Sannah's race.) Sannah's a prominent character in my fanfic, I want to describe her appearence correctly. My current impression is currrently something along the lines of cat-girl, but that's mostly placeholder right now.

BTW...does anyone know why starwars.com's Aliens page doesn't have an entry for the Chiss? You'd think such an important species would at least merit its own page.

And don't say they're not including EU-only aliens either. There's a page for the Falleen, even for the Ysalamiri. So why not Chiss?

Yeah, that's the Kaleesh. We've seen them before, though, in Visionaries and in Insider. Perhaps the guide will show the face behind the mask for once...

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but one piece of concept art seems to look a lot like General Grievous.

Perhaps we finally have an image of a Kaleesh.

Shaak Ti's species is Togruta.

I expect to see every species from the movies in this guide and especially species without a proper background (Vurk, Ongree, Holwuff, etc...). I don't want to see species from EU stuff that have been described 1000 times in other books. I just hope this book has a lot of new information instead of old information stuffed into a new look.

My blog entry about species

Can anyone tell me what Shaak-Ti's species is called, and will they be in the guide?

As for Yoda, he's Yoda! What more do we need to know?

*mention of the Mandalorians maybe? *

That would be great, if you refer to the warrior race descending from the Taung Shadow Warriors mentioned in the History of the Mandalorians article in Insider #80.

Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense since I'm pretty sure a number of species make up the Mandalorians.

However, we do need more references to Yoda Stories... looks at VIPs ;)

Oh, and there's a yellowish-green Yodian in Tales: Emperor's Court. Of course, its non-canon, and there's the usual problem of other suspicious Easter Eggs in the background, like muppets and characters from other franchises, but he's still present.
