What's ironic is that GL will never be able to take part in the EU on a major level. The minute he becomes part of the project it's nolonger "expanded" it's top level cannon.

:^O that's classic!!! Granted you could diesect it further- anything that GL works on in EU and acknowledges in the EU in his projects seases to be EU. Would EU converted stuff then become GU? :^O

Take the Force Unleashed video game for example. Normally this would be an expanded universe project. But it's not . The minute GL became part of the storyline it elevated into the official next installment of Star Wars.

So now it will be as follows:
Prequels, Clone Wars cartoon and CGI series, Force Unleashed, Original Trilogy.

So in an odd kinda way GL can't take part in the EU. Alyaa Secura is nolonger considered an EU character because GL put her in the films so now shes elevated. It's weird.

On the contrary, Lucas has been quite enthusiastic about the EU in the past, presenting old drafts of his scripts to Roy Thomas and Archie Goodwin in the Marvel days in order to help shape their stories, and SOTME was directly lifted from scrapped ideas from the first film. The fact is that Lucas has no time to read the novels, and at best skims the comics (a picture being worth the proverbial thousand words, I guess). Again, though, the enthusiasm on Lucas's part stems from a financial interest, not a fan perspective.

it's not a huge deal, really if you think about it George Lucas has never had a lot of interest in the EU. EU has some cool stuff to look into and me as a fan, i consider it part of the overall story.

Star Wars should always be Skywalker oriented. Which is why the Sith/Old Republic era is always "so many year before Luke/Anakin Skywalker." The stories of anyone not related genetically to the Skywalkers is merely background... and in the cases of many earlier EU characters, became intimated connected to them. Keyan Farlander... becomes Jedi. Corran Horn, becomes Jedi. Han Solo, becomes the husband of and father to Skywalker Jedi. Even the Fetts, all because of their connection to the Skywalkers. Even the Republic Commandos. It all revolves around them, and the greatest tragedy of the EU is allowing the Skywalker name to be tarnished by bad characterization. Especially of Luke.

Here's the kicker, as the Star Wars Messiah and the subsequent lineage of the SW Messiah... the entire Star Wars galaxy kind of does revolve around the Skywalkers. From the earliest stories we have to the furthest in the future. You can sort of think of the post-ROTJ eras as being what would have went down had there actually been blood descendents of Jesus Christ and if they were public figures working against the forces of satanic tyranny. Ever generation after Luke Skywalker will have a scion of the Chosen One... be they Skywalker, Solo or... yes... Fel. Let alone any other number of names that may be picked up along the way. There have to be predecessors somewhere too. Zayne Carrick may very well be related to the Chosen One in some very distant way. The name Skywalker is the axis upon which the SW universe turns. It always has been... even when the hero was Annakin Starkiller ... SKYWALKER was the founder of the Jedi Bendu of the Ashla who taught his 12 children!

I continue by informing all who care to read the books that i am open to ideas, and would be more than happy to incorporate them into my own books, if they would, in turn, be willing to help me get the go ahead from the proper authorities. I am no flamer, I am just the one person who may actually be willing to write a Star Wars book which does not revolve around the Skywalkers, Solos, or Calrissians, respectfully. Not to say that I don't like any of them, I do, I am just pointing out that, like how Luke embodied it, we shouldn't be bound by what has come before.

Alright, I, for one, completely understand where Lucas is coming from. His original dream has been fulfilled, and he has, theoretically, no hold over what happens next. I am an aspiring author, and have thought long and hard of where the EU will go next, following the battle clips game or heading further into the unknown regions, maybe making up a new threat from an old character, the possibilities are next to endless. We all have made it thus far without Lucas holding our hands, I believe we can all go further. I am grateful for Lucas's decision back then to allow authors to expand his universe, yet now i believe it is our time to make it more than just something restricted by the movies, as incredible as they are.

(Though some have claimed this was a bad idea, we forget that authors have done this since time immemorial. Even Tolkien amended the previously published Hobbit to fit the continuity of Lord of the Rings.) When Lucas says there is no story beyond ROTJ, that's obviously referring to HIS story. The EU is not and never has been his story. Kevin Anderson made this plain in the preface to Dark Empire, and people have been conveniently forgetting it ever since.

I used to argue vehemently that the works by other authors were just as official as the films. I know better now. I don't even quibble over what level of canon things reside in; I recognize continuity gaffs, complain about the really outrageous ones, and let the lesser ones slide. Ultimately, though, it's just a franchise, and the sooner people can realize that and get on with their lives, the happier they'll be.

I think, because there was an effort in the early nineties to have an interconnected continuity between the novels and comics (etc.) that people have forgotten that the EU is simply an elaborate licensed entertainment. Authors are hired to tell stories because that puts money in George Lucas's pocket. It's not disrespectful to the authors to say that their work has no impact on his (obviously, he made some concessions, incorporating the name of Coruscant and the character of Aayla Secura). It's worth mentioning that the authors themselves have clearly gone beyond the bounds set by Lucas (with erroneous backstories for characters, etc.), and that their material is constantly being overwritten by new films, comics, etc. Even the films themselves have been overwritten by the special editions, DVD editions, etc.

Even though I prefer the EU over the orignals anyway, I just think it would be too hard to step in and do some of the things right now with the EU. The story line right now is what? from the books view... I cant remember 60? 70? years ahead of new hope? and the comics, depending which one you read. The example I will use is the Legacy series, is even further head. I personally would think making a who saga on the Yuzzhan Vong war. Would be the coolest thing of all time. But seriously? only the most hardcore sw fans would understand that. so it would be a lose really.

Gah... Last night, I had the perfect reply, but I forget it. Anywho, methinks the whole thing about Lucas and the EU is best described by this image. As Twisted Toyfare Theatre noted in another skit, the 'Xp'nd'd 'N'vers' is ruled by the almighty T'm'thy Za'n, and to be honest... they are right in a way. If Lucas really wanted to have a hand in the EU, we'd prolly see alot less apostrophes.

But, the EU has grown to monsterous proportions and is too far outta control. Apostrophes and Mary Sue'd characters run wild and free. And Lucas has better things to do with his time than dirty his hands with adding vowels to outlandishly-ridiculous names.

What George Lucas think about the EU really has no bearing. Star Wars is not really OWNED by any one person, it has developed to such a degree that it is part of the public imagination

I think his bank manager and lawyer would disagree with that statement.

Sorry, but SW is GL's baby, and if it wasn't, the company or studio would have pumped out more films already to capitalize on the brand. So, whether it's in the "public imagination" or not, GL still has final say, he just isnt' bothered by people making money off of situations and characters he created or gave a universe for them to be created in.

I don't see why GL couldn't just be producer for some of the stories beyond EP VI as animated / CGI for TV with different creators/directors such as Dave Filoni, Genndy Tartakovski or others. As the tech gets better, and with it the ease of CGI film making, thus grows the possibilities of such a thing as, well i always think of something like "Star Wars Tales, The Animated Series" where different film makers could pitch differet stories in different eras and so forth, not confined to one base of charactors. Sort of like a syndicated fan film show, but with accomplished (or maybe just lucky) film makers. What would be wrong with that?

I must say that it pains my heart to know that GL will not be making any more full films based in the SW universe. However, I didn't need GL to say it to know that this is the way it must be. I look inside my heart and I really don't need any more films... I am current with the Legacy of the Force series (9 books) and I must say it has let loose a spirit in me that I haven't felt in a long time. If you haven't read them I strongly encourage you to. The films and games of the SW universe have informed us of all we need to know to imagine the beauty and intensity of a story we read. Let the story roll through your mind and honor all the efforts to make it one of the best tales ever told. And always remember, the force will be with you, always.

I think some people are getting a little too proud of themselves.

I agree.

I hate to say it, but some of you sound ungrateful and almost spoiled rotten. Why should he be bound by EU?

An if he was....they will still talk trash about him. It's a no win situation.........this is why GL doesnt waste his time with us. Were ungratefull.

< Absolutely right. Lucas can do whatever he wants. I'm so happy he doesn't care about EU and most of all about the post-RotJ EU.

I think some people are getting a little too proud of themselves. It seems here that people thinkthat Lucas owes some of his prosperity to EU...when it seems to me that is almost an insult to him. I think he included those things in teh movies from EU because he was doing a cameo appearence, which would further excite the fans. He takes the things he likes from EU in order to in a way, reward the hard work of the writers by making it offical G-Level canon.
