Hi Sue,

I have a question about the new Scanimation book that was announced here.

Is there a release date for it? I ask because the supplier's website said April 2010, but the Wook and that posting on TOS said May 2010, and my graphic novel distributor implied closer to June 2010.

I'm really hoping that these will be out in April, as my niece and nephew have a bunch of scanimation books and this seems like the best way to start indoctrinating them into loving Star Wars (they turn 1 in mid-April, so I thought it would be a fun birthday gift from Cool Uncle Mason_1701)

Book 7. Darth Tyrannus - Sean Stewart would be an amazing author for this one. It would be fascinating to see more of Dooku while he was still a jedi, his leaving the order, falling in with Palpatine, dealings with Sifo-Diyas and the Kaminoans, organizing the Confederacy... This doesn't have to contain stuff to contradict the Clone Wars cartoon because all of it is in the past leading up to AOTC.

What do you think?

Book 1. Darth Malak - way too interesting of a character to never be touched on again.
Book 2. General Greivous - most of the story could be him on Kahlee and ends with becoming a cyborg.
Book 3. Thrawn - chronicle when he joined the Empire and his rise to power within it.
Book 4. Darth Plagueis - maybe see some of his master. It would be cool to end this with his encountering Palpatine for the first time.
Book 5. Darth Sidious - Picks up where the Plagueis book left off. Could contain his first encounters with Darth Maul, Dooku, and lots of politics.
Book 6. Darth Maul - chronicle his recruitment by Sidious, training and some missions.

Hey Sue!

Just want to compliment you on how cool it is that you make such an effort to keep fans in the loop. Thanks for being so generous with your time.

Is there any chance of getting Sean Stewart to do any more novel work for you? Dark Rendezvous was such an amazing book. It's a shame for that to be the only Star Wars book he's done.

Also, what's up with James Luceno? He is WAY too good of a Star Wars author to not be doing any more novels. I was so disappointed when I heard he was not given the green light to do the Darth Plagueis novel...

Lastly, I have an idea that I think would be pretty amazing for a series of novels. It could just be about villains. They could cover their origins, and everything that made them the individual they became when the audience first saw them.
(contd.)

That's not exactly what's happening. And I don't think that rebooting was necessary to make the new Star Trek movie good, even though it happened in canon. If their backstory was so convoluted that it was literally impossible to make a movie about their first adventure, then why bother with canon in the first place?

GL is already "rebooting" Star Wars "EU" via the Clone Wars.

JJ Abrams' rebooted Star Trek has made that moribund property interesting for the first time in decades. Think what a similar approach could do for the increasingly hidebound SW universe.

DarthMRN:

Your impression is wrong. That is not true about intellectual property law, nor is it true about most other areas of the law, either. When a pharmacist illegally sells Oxycontin without a prescription, it doesn't make their entire business illegal (just that one sale). When a company includes one false statement in their SEC filing, it doesn't mean their entire filing is securities fraud (just that one lie). When one software company unlawfully uses some code from another company's program, it doesn't mean the entire product is open source for everyone to use for free (just that the infringer has to pay a licensing fee). The same is true in copyright - only the infringing parts are illegal, not the whole thing.

I'm sorry if the law doesn't make sense to you, but these rules have been in place for hundreds of years.

Have you guys ever thought of doing a reboot? (Please say no, please...)

Not only is there almost zero demand for something like that, they already have the perfect way to circumvent continuity with the Infinities logo. I've only read Infinities: A New Hope and it was epic! And some of the non-canon Tales are good too, but are almost always just there for humor.

But yeah, no reboots! :)

*Even though it's a HP fanfic, I, not Rowling, own all the components of the story which are not encompassed within Rowling's rights. *

All I can tell you is that my watching of a gazillion legal shows on TV has left me with the definite impression that people who engage in illegal ventures void any legal claims related to those ventures they would have had if it weren't illegal. Which makes tons of sense, BTW.

But near as I can see, copyright law doesn't make sense, so your retaining those legal rights isn't surprising. It apparently bends over backwards to protect people, to the point of impracticality. Which is fair enough. Then I know that, at least.

And frankly, the fact that it was illegal while offering legal rights was the small problem. What I wanted to know was how this legal discrepancy made sense in the big picture. I discovered it didn't.

I don't know if I'll buy the hardcover either. The first three weren't good enough. It would be a waste of money.

Oh. Wow. Yeah, didn't notice the release date there. Oh well, at least it'll be out before the apocalypse.

Yeah, and Jedi Dawn has a tentative release date of November 2012. That's about 4 years.

3 years and 10 months, if you want to be exact.

4 years? Patterns of Force only came out a little more than a year ago, didn't it?

Even if it's received well after the fact, it's hard to reopen the storyline if it's been effectively closed.

Some feel that's exactly what happened with the Coruscant Nights series. In addition, the first three were released nearly all at once, but the fourth comes almost 4 years later?

Of course, there could have been issues with the authors preventing them from writing a fourth until now.

*it could be because it's the last one of the series (not that all series' last books are hardcover). *

Perhaps. It's certainly not because it's what the fans want, according to the forums across the net. Almost every CNIV thread I've seen starts off with displeasure about the decision to go hardcover.

What about parodies or works (books, comics, movies) somehow connected with Star Wars like "Strange Case of Origami Yoda". How does then LFL policy work?

Parodies and satires are fine and not considered copyright infringement. The publishers of the Origami Yoda book contacted us and we gave it our okay. It's a fun story.

Could that be subject to change if the novel is well received?

I would guess no. Since they're planning on it being the last in the series, they'll have to wrap up the characters stories at the end of it. Even if it's received well after the fact, it's hard to reopen the storyline if it's been effectively closed. And as a big fan of this series and its characters, I really hope this novel brings some real closure to the series.

Sue, I understand LFL fanfic policy, it's quite obvious, but I have another similar question. What about parodies or works (books, comics, movies) somehow connected with Star Wars like "Strange Case of Origami Yoda". How does then LFL policy work?
