Compared with finding out Spock had a half-brother in STV, this is nothing. Get over it, people.

Thanks. I'm not trying to defend myself with the Chak thing -- yeah, I knew it was going to cause problems with continuity and I feel very strongly about maintaining continuity. There isn't much more I can say about it.

Spork: you're right, of course - the perspective is appreciated. But there are vocal fanboys out there who do this in their sleep... omnivorous readers with minds for trivia...

I assumed from the way stuff was being handled here that this had become the Unofficial Continuity Fixes Thread... appologies if that was a misapprehension...

Besides, most fans aren't going to notice stuff like the whole Chak thing. I didn't notice, and no matter how many fanboy hissyfits I see over it, I still can't bring myself to care.

And no, don't fool yourselves, TFN is not most fans. TFN, or at least the Lit forums, is 90% concentrated obsessive fanboy, as I am reminded every time I dare to venture in.

I'm not saying we should all strive for Spork-levels of apathy towards such minor details, but as Sremmuy says, it's not always a black and white issue. There are more important issues than Baron Fel's offspring in both the EU and the world at large.

Sremmuy, I respect you beyond words for coming here and putting up with these kinds of fanboys. I think you and the VIPs being here DOES show that people at LFL care, and it disgusts me to see how some posters treat you. I don't feel the EU is perfect by any means, but I do know you guys are trying as hard as you can to make it better.

Sue: sorry! And, speaking as someone who enjoyed both SQ and the NJO immensely - thanks!

Your work is appreciated... and creativity is surely worth a few continuity flubs...

I can understand that there's context here we don't know about... and I appreciate that things are probably more complex than raving fanboys realise...

But, having thought about this now way too much (at least you get paid for your trouble! ;))... I think I can see a fix that actually works...

I appreciate what you're saying. I agree with your assessment of the situation, however, one instance of this happening is being spoken of as though it's our policy. It is not. Things are complicated and not always black and white. Life goes on.

I believe his criticism is that he understands that it is difficult to detect minute continuity errors, and would not mind if this was the case. But he doesn't understand why you would let Mr. Zahn keep the name Chak even though it broke with continuity.

He believes you let continuity errors go to print, even though you are aware of them, and then fix them through later material, rather than just preventing them in the first place. At least that is what I understand to be his stance after reading his posts here and at tfn, if I misrepresented him I apologize.

Please note this does not reflect my opinion, although I do not like what appears to be Mr. Zahn's attitude towards other authors' work.

I mean, you're in charge here, not the self-proclaimed High Holy Messiah of the EU. I could be wrong, but I doubt you would've let any other author besides Zahn do this sort of thing.

Have you ever been in the situation where 45 people are each throwing 2,000 golf balls at you simultaneously while a group of spectators watches, keyboards in hand, ready to pounce if you let one or two get by?

Valiento, go ahead and post this on tfn. You can trash me over there, okay?

This is supposed to be fun.

Hi there,
Valiento forced me to post here.

The reason is I suspect Jagged Fel being a clone (who with access to clone technology would send his last son to fight against the Yuuzhan Vong?) Any information is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Don't worry about it, Suzanne. It's just Bidlo being Bidlo.

I did delete the doublepost, though. :D

Bidlo - you never fail to go over the top ;) but this time you actually made me laugh!

Sadly after reading SQ it actually doesn't seem so far fetched anymore.

(whoops - sorry DS, I was composing this whilst you were posting. Delete it if you want ...)

Oh dear lord Bidlo. That's going a tad too far even for Zahn. While I may enjoy your constant stream of extremist bile, at least keep it out of the VIP thread. It wouldn't kill you to be polite, after all.

Anyway, if Padme fangirls anyone via Zahn, on the off chance she's even in his PT novel, it would be Thrawn. ;)

I can just see the endless nightmare unfolding now.

I bet Padme will meet Mara's mother Thrawn's wife) in Zahn's puke-inducing version, and she will make Padme look like a dunce, and Padme will admire her reddy goldy gold hair, creamy breasts, and think how perfect she is, and fret that Anakin will fall in love with her on sight. Of course, Anakin will start to point out to Padme how Mara's mother is so much smarter than her, and why Palaptine is right to trust people like the Thrawns. And Padme will say, "Oh, you're right, who can hold a candle to "Emerald" Jade? She can do anything, perfectly, and never ages. If only our son would be fortunate to land such a rare treasure as that!"

(All I can say, is if anything like that nauseating scene happens, that movie will Misery will seem like the Disney version.)

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but don't you think that might be a bit of an overreaction?

Yeah.
I will read the PT ones until EPIII. Nothing after that, and no post NJO, unless Luke and Leia find their cousins, or something about their mom.

I want to read post EPIII stuff, but Zahn will throw one of his little snits, and before you know it, Mara, at the age of six, since she's the REAL Chosen One, will be telling Vader he's an idiot and Palptine and Thrawn will laugh, and Palps will tell Vader to go scrub the floors again. It's just boils my blood, years ahead of time, since that is exactly how it will turn out.

I wonder what version GL gets. He probably hasn't got a clue how bad Zahn is, and how he tries to undermine everything GL has established on film to put his Mary Sues and Gary Stus above not only Luke, Leia, and Han, that's not good enough. Oh no, he wants to go after their parents, too.
The VIPS will allow anything he does.

We believe that Chak is actually Davin, but Tim Zahn wanted to call him Chak. Probably a nickname, as someone suggested.

I can't believe the continuity editors left a continuity problem in a book ON PURPOSE.

To quote Valiento, "It is a sad day when star trek continuity is kept better than star wars continuity."

"believe that's also in a recent issue of Insider."

Ya it was(about 4-5 issues back), but then Sue Rostoni denied the the remark in the thread, with the quote I posted up.

"No, George did not tell us to kill Anakin. He didn't tell us to kill anybody. He approved the deaths of characters, in theory, then told us who we COULDN'T kill (i.e., Luke). The creative group decided the main story plotpoints (i.e., the deaths) and the author(s) created the action and situations."

What is the matter with you VIPS? Can't you put your lips together to form the word no?

I have to agree, although I would've phrased it a bit more politely.

If you didn't want to force him to use a previously named character, would it have been so hard to make him insert one or two references explaining that Chak was a nickname and giving the real name?

That seems like a reasonable compromise.

I mean, you're in charge here, not the self-proclaimed High Holy Messiah of the EU. I could be wrong, but I doubt you would've let any other author besides Zahn do this sort of thing.

I'm really never going to read another book. It's not worth it.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but don't you think that might be a bit of an overreaction?

I agree with most of the points that Bidlo made, except I don't feel quite as strongly about it as he does and wouldn't have phrased it quite so harshly.

I don't quite "loathe" him, but I "loathe" some of the things he's done in the EU.

I didn't hate Mara from the get-go, in fact I rather liked her in the Corellian trilogy.

But I do hate how Zahn is so high on his own creations (such as Thrawn) that he never references anything else besides Stackpole. And he keeps beating the reader over the head with references to his other books. Yes, Tim, I've read TTT and Hand of Thrawn! You don't need to keep reminding me! Jeez.

Speaking hypothetically on the assumption that Chak is Davin, if you knew that Chak was Davin and you also knew that Davin is dead before "Red Sky, Blue Flame," would that effect your reading of Survivor's Quest?

Since I am a rabid, nitpicky fanboy who obsesses over trivial details like this, I'd have to say "Yes."

Making your reader do that is a great narrative tool if there's an explaination later on, or even a hint that there's an explaination to be had. But otherwise, it just leaves me feeling... well, cranky.

I agree.

Hmm that doesn't match up with what is said in round robin interview, or later answers in this thread, which first stated that Lucas told them to kill Anakin.

Somewhere (I believe it was at one of James Luceno's book signings for TUF) I heard that Lucas wanted them to kill off Anakin. Because the movies were focusing on one Anakin, and he didn't like that the NJO was focusing too much around another Anakin.
